User Guidelines

The Instructional Media Lab is open to faculty, staff, and students in the College of Education. The lab staff is available to assist you with the software and hardware in the lab. However, because we have a limited amount of time to assist each lab user, we ask that you exhaust other resources such as your class syllabi, class notes, software manuals, classmates, online resources, and instructors prior to asking lab staff for help. Below are some guidelines that will help you work efficiently in the IML.

Lab Staff...

Neal Fogelhut provides technical support services for the Complex. Gregg Koyamatsu is the staff Information Technology Consultant and coordinates the graduate assistants in the lab. This semester, the graduate assistants are Eric Logan, Susan Phares, and Renee Carson. The faculty director of the complex is Bob Hoffman.

When on duty, members of the lab staff wear a blue vest and post their name and picture on the front bulletin board. If you need assistance, please ask one of the lab staff wearing the blue vest. Occasionally, you'll find a lab staff working on their school work in the lab. Please do not disturb them if they are not wearing the blue vest.

Lab staff are available for support and guidance. Typical lab staff duties are:
  • Orienting students to the lab.
  • Solving printing problems.
  • Solving software incompatibility.
  • Providing manuals and job aids.
  • Checking out equipment.

Unfortunately, lab staff may not do the following:

  • Script or program authoring (e.g. Director, Hypercard) applications or HTML files.
  • Complete any portion of an assigned project.
  • Allow you to take manuals or resources out of the lab.
  • Take computer reservations over the phone.
  • Provide technical support over the phone for your personal computer.

When you first enter the lab, please sign in. The sign-in notebook is located next to the door. You'll need to provide your name, date, and class that you will use the computer for. The lab staff may ask you for proof of registration.

Reservations...

Towards the middle of the semester, the lab becomes very crowded. We highly recommend that you reserve a computer. Students and faculty of the College of Education may reserve computer workstations up to two weeks in advance. The reservation policy follows:

  • Students may reserve two, one-hour time blocks each day.
  • If someone is using the computer that you reserved, please notify them a few minutes in advance so that they can save their work.
  • Lab staff will remove reservations over the phone, but will not take reservations.
  • Any person who is more than 15 minutes late for their reservation will forfeit the reservation and must attempt to reserve another computer.

Printing...

There are two laserwriters and one color inkjet located in the back of the IML. Printing cost 10 cents per page for laserprints and $1.00 for color prints. Ask labstaff to print color documents for you. We use all printing money that we receive to purchase new laserwriter toner, color cartridges, and paper.

General Rules...

The following are additional lab rules, please:

  • No food and drinks in the lab
  • Do not install software on the IML computers
  • Contact a lab staff before connecting an external SCSI device.
  • Be courteous to fellow lab users.
