Counseling and School Psychology

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY,

AS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES HAVE CHANGED FOR SUMMER 2002

Applying to the Department of Counseling and School Psychology requires an application to SDSU's graduate division, as well as a separate written application to each program in which the candidate intends to enroll. Each program has developed its own application materials since the professional training paths of each program require different qualifications. In addition, SDSU Graduate Application must also be completed to be accepted into the department

A completed application consists of:

  1. Separate applications for each program for which you wish to apply
  2. Three letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes. Consult your program application for specific forms which need to be used.
  3. Two official transcripts for all colleges and universities attended.
  4. GRE scores must be sent to SDSU..
  5. CBEST results if required by the program(s) for which you are applying.

Applying to SDSU's Graduate Division
In addition to applying to the Department of Counseling and School Psychology, you must also apply to the Graduate Admissions office of SDSU. The Department of Counseling and School Psychology cannot waive this requirement.

SDSU requires completion of this California State University System-wide application form. You can access the CSU application on-line or you may obtain this application at any CSU campus or by calling 619/594-6871. When completing this form, be sure to indicate the accurate Major Code (08261) and Credential Code (00802 for School Counseling; 00804 for School Psychology), and mail it directly to SDSU.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE):
The Graduate Division of SDSU requires taking the GRE General Test as a condition for full admission status. The Department of Counseling and School Psychology cannot waive this requirement. The Department of Counseling and School Psychology, however, does not require specific GRE scores to be attained. Official score report must be sent to SDSU Graduate Admissions (code 4682). If you already hold an advanced degree, you do not need to take the GRE.

California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST):
Taking the CBEST is a state-required condition of admission to the School Psychology or School Counseling programs. Passing the CBEST is a state requirement for award of the internship or professional credentials. If you do not live in California, you may take the CBEST in your first semester.
