Courses

The program requires 60 units of specified coursework as the Official Program of Study plus up to an additional 2-9 units to complete all license-eligibility requirements. Courses specifically required for licensure beyond the basic curriculum are marked with an *. The curriculum is designed to offer experiences in personal growth, theory and model knowledge, clinical knowledge development, and foundational research required for building complex clinical skills.

In special circumstances students may elect to take the Thesis option. This option is only open to students whose current outside work involves research activity or who have other specialized backgrounds enhanced by Thesis activity. Students must consult with their advisor to make this decision. Students who are approved for the Thesis option do not need to take CSP 710A and CSP 710B.

B. Personal psychotherapy.

All students are required to participate in a personal psychotherapy experience for a minimum of 12 sessions. The form and format of this therapy is the student's choice to fulfill the program requirement.


C. Professional identity development.

All students are expected to join the professional organizations of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Students also must obtain Professional Liability Insurance in order to provide clinical services. Students are also encouraged and supported to attend professional conferences and workshops and make a professional presentation at a conference.

D. Codes of Ethics & BBS Laws and Regulations.

Adherence to the Laws and Regulations Relating to the Practice of Marriage and Family Therapy issued by the Board of Behavioral Sciences, the Code of Ethics of American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists, and the Code of Ethics of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists is mandatory. Students who knowingly or unknowingly violate any part of the laws or ethical codes may be dismissed from the program without further qualification regardless of coursework completed or other academic achievement.
