Program Design
The program consists of two years of full-time graduate study.
Students can earn either:
enter the 60-62 unit M.S. degree with a specialization in school counseling and the California PPS-SC credential
OR
the PPS-SC credential, in combination with master's programs (51-62 units) in School psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology.
The program is designed to provide a cohesive sequence of learning experiences and is based on the assumption that there is a core of skills and knowledge prerequisite to entry as a practicing school counselor. Program design and curriculum has been influenced by the state (California Commission on Teacher Credentialing) and national (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program) professional preparation standards for school counselors.
The San Diego State University Program is designed to meet and exceed these requirements, and in most cases, meets the more rigorous national professional preparation standards for school counselors established by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP) in January of 2001.
