School Psychology Credentials and Licenses

Certificate of Clearance
Immediately upon acceptance into the School Psychology Program, you need to apply for your Certificate of Clearance (contact the Center for Careers in Education, Education Building). This certificate is required prior to beginning any field experience in the program. Failure to obtain this certificate, or failure to file a copy of the certificate in the school psychology office, may result in the state's rejection of your field experiences toward credentialing.

Requirements include:

1. Formal application
2. Fingerprints
 

 


School Psychology Internship Credential
In the last semester of Phase II of the program, you will apply for the School Psychology Internship Credential. This credential is time-limited and allows the practice of school psychology in the public schools under the supervision of a credentialed school psychologist.

Requirements include:

1. Certificate of Clearance;
2. Satisfactory completion of all Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III courses and experiences;
3. Passing the CBEST*; and
4. Recommendation of the school psychology faculty contingent on your academic and professional readiness to be an intern, determined in the Internship Readiness Review.
*Note: In Winter 1995, the CTC established criteria for initial CBEST waivers for full-time personnel. If you have not yet passed the CBEST as you begin internship, you may request that your hiring district propose a waiver of the CBEST requirement. The following criteria, however, must be met and included in the proposal:
· evidence that you have taken the CBEST and passed at least one section of the test
· evidence of attempt to remediate under a reasonable plan developed specifically for the purpose of increasing the likelihood of passing the exam.
· evidence that the district will insure that you have access to appropriate support and assistance (e.g. tutoring, coursework)
· committment to take the CBEST one or more times within the year of the waiver.
Caution: This is a one-year waiver only.

 


School Psychology Credential
In the last semester of the Internship, you will apply for the School Psychology Credential. This credential allows the practice of school psychology in the school setting. A formal application procedure is required (see your advisor).

Requirements include:

1. School Psychology Internship Credential;
2. Satisfactory completion of all program requirements; and
3. Recommendation of the internship instructor and the Program Director.
Note: This credential pertains only to the State of California. If you plan to work in another state, it is imperative that you work with your advisor in developing your program of studies. Additional coursework may be necessary.

 


 
National Certification in School Psychology
You are encouraged to obtain national certification following the award of your school psychology credential. National certification is conducted under the auspices of the National Board of Certified School Psychologists in association with NASP. This certificate facilitates credentialing across state lines and is generally accepted as an indicator of achievement
