Credentials and Licenses
School Counseling Credential
It is possible, in consultation
with your advisor, to create an emphasis in school counseling as an addition
to the requirements of the School Psychology Program. Formal application
with our School Counseling Program is necessary to pursue this emphasis.
If you wish to be eligible for this credential, it will be necessary to
work closely with your advisor and the Director of the School Counseling
Program to develop a four-year plan of studies.
Marriage, Family, and
Child Counseling License
Licensure as a Marriage,
Family, and Child (MFCC) Counselor requires completion of an approved
degree program. At SDSU, the approved degree program is the M.S. in
Counseling with specialization in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling.
Thus, if you wish to pursue the MFCC license in addition to your school
psychology studies, you need to apply and be accepted in the MFCC degree
program. You will need to complete all MFCC degree requirements and
pursue your school psychology studies as credential (not degree) requirements.
This combination of studies will require a substantial number of extra
courses and experiences, thus it is essential that you work closely
with your school psychology advisor as well as your MFCC advisor (or
the Director of the MFCC program).
Psychology License
This license, also regulated
by the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners, requires a doctorate in
psychology (plus supervised hours and examinations). It is listed here
for your information because the law regulates both the title and practice
of psychology. Only licensed psychologists may hold themselves out to
the public as "psychologists." It is this law that makes it illegal for
school psychologists to identify themselves as psychologists without the
"school" adjective.
