Financial Assistance

The means to pay for higher education can become a primary concern for individuals considering committing themselves to several years of intensive study within a graduate program. Resources do exist, and with persistence, students have generally been successful in obtaining some support. Don't abandon your desire, explore your options! Information and funding is available and distributed via four general pathways.

Please visit the Department website for general options for financial assistance:

Below are additional options that are specifically offered through the SDSU School Psychology Program:

Department of Counseling and School Psychology

Serves primarily as an information conduit (e.g., bulletin board notices and class announcements); provides opportunities to work part-time under the college work-study program or as a graduate assistant (contact the department secretary).

  • L. Strom Memorial Loan Fund. A short-term emergency loan can be requested by writing a letter to the Department Chair, stating the reason for the loan, the amount requested, and a repayment schedule. Contact the Department secretary for more information.
  • Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Scholarship. The California Association of School Psychologists awards this scholarship to applicants who "have progressed to the second year of an accredited school psychology program in the state of California, and who must be a member of a culturally and linguistically diverse minority group". Further, CASP seeks to "provide and promote opportunities for the recruitment of school psychologists responsive to the ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the individual children who are part of the increasingly diverse population of California". For more information or an application, please contact CASP at http://www.casponline.org.
  • NASP Education and Research Trust-Minority Scholarship Program. "To help foster and encourage diversity in the profession, the Program will annually award $5,000 to at least one qualified and select student of School Psychology". Additional information and application form are available in the SDSU School Psychology office.

School Psychology Program

We have been fortunate to be able to provide some type of financial assistance to every full-time student in the program since 1996. Our faculty have obtained federally-funded projects which provide financial support for students through traineeships and/or assistantships. Eligibility, requirements, opportunities, and range of support varies across projects. Opportunities are announced at least annually to all school psychology students. Contact project directors for information or visit our Program Projects Page.

Project Traineeships

(please visit our Program Projects Page for more project budget and Service Obligation information) are awards under our federally-funded personnel preparation projects. Each project has specified requirements to be fulfilled in exchange for a traineeship support package which may include stipends and/or a variety of allowances (e.g., tuition/fees, conference travel, professional development, books). Acceptance of some traineeships requires a service obligation. Contact project directors for information
