Formatting Paragraphs and Lists |
|
|
|
Just as with a word processor, press the Return key only at the end of a list item or a paragraph. Again because these pages are going to be seen with different systems, they will appear differently to people with different sized monitors. A test to be sure you haven't pressed any extra returns is to change the size of your window to make it narrow.
|
|
Here is a sample that looks fine in a wide window:
But in a narrow window you can see that the author hit the Return key at the end of each line, resulting in weird line breaks.
|
| There
are three ways to format paragraphs: traditional indenting, block
or with hanging indents (used for lists with numbers or bullets).
Because the screens will appear differently it is best to not use traditional indenting. To do traditional indenting correctly you need to insert an invisible image at the start of each paragraph. It's a lot of work and probably not worth it for our purposes. Graphics will be covered later in the course. For now, please use block paragraphs in your web pages. Don't try to indent the first line. Rules: press the Return or Enter key only at the end of a paragraph, do not press the space bar or tab to indent a paragraph. Double space instead - use block paragraphs. |
|
Indenting If you
have paragraph(s) that you would like to indent, then select the text
and use the increase indent option. In Composer this is an option
under the Format menu or Extra spacing will appear between the indented text and the rest of the file. Rule: Do not press the space bar or the tab to indent text. Use the increase indent option. |
|
Bulleted Lists Bullets
are easy in most web editors. In Composer you type the list select
text and pull down the Format menu to List to Bulleted,
or you can select the text and click on Two Kinds of Lists:The bullets will automatically be indented and extra space will appear between different levels of indents. The bullets displayed will change with each indent level too. Longer paragraphs will line up under the text not the bullet so it is easier for people to read. Rule: Use bullets and indenting to add meaning and variety to your pages. |

| Numbered
Lists
Numbered
lists are a little different as the numbers do not appear in the editing
area. The technique is the same as for making a bulleted list
- except click on the You will save a lot of time editing by using block paragraphs and using the bullet and number features of your web editor. |

Rules:
Take your time when using the numbering option. Be sure to check
out how the text appears in your browser before uploading. If
you are putting other paragraphs between the numbered points it will
be easier to just type the number out and to forget using the auto number
option.
