Free Web Server
All students will need to have access to a web server in order to complete exercises in Homer 4 and beyond. You may use just about any free or commercial Web server you wish (the free and lowest cost Yahoo Geocities accounts will not accept Dreamweaver or other FTP programs, but the "higher" level accounts will).
We recommend SDSU's Rohan server, for those who might wish to use it. By signing up for a rohan email account you get web server space as well. You can get a rohan email/web account by logging into the SDSU Web portal:
- SDSU Web portal (https://sunspot.sdsu.edu/pls/webapp/web_menu.login)
Once you've logged on to the SDSU webportal, click the "Graduate" tab (not "Extended
Ed"). Then click on "Get a Rohan E-mail Account" and follow the instructions.
If you run out of space in your rohan account, you can obtain more for free by requesting it via email at scc@rohan.sdsu.edu.
Other Web Hosting Services
Those who feel comfortable striking out on their own a little might like to consider subscribing to a commercial web hosting service. Advantages include: 1) you can obtain and use your own domain name (e.g., www.janedoe.com); and 2) you can keep your web address after you leave SDSU.
The downside: 1) it'll cost you $3-6 per month, depending on the service you choose, plus a small yearly fee for registering your domain name and, perhaps, optional services you may want to purchase; and 2) the instructor and fellow students will be less likely to be able to provide technical support for uploading and downloading—you'll be pretty much on your own with whatever help your hosting services provides.
To choose a web hosting service—if you don't already have one—take a look at Hosting Review (http://www.hosting-review.com/). While it isn't always listed in Hosting Reviews top-10 web hosting services, many EDTEC 798B students recently looked around and chose DreamHost (http://www.dreamhost.com/) for their e-portfolios and other purposes.
