Introduction

This lesson is designed with two purposes, first to educate you about some of the more common Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). The second is to understand the difference between a virus and bacteria. Follow the steps below.



The Task

#1 Your task is to view the various links which have been hig! hlighted in this webquest. There are several pieces of information you will gather from the following activity.

  • What is the difference between a virus and bacteria?
  • What is an STD?
  • What are three bacterial infections and how are they treated?
  • What are three viral infections and how are they treated?
  • What types of preventative measures can one use to avoid STD's?
#2 After carefully viewing each of the links, you and your group may take the quiz together. 

Once you have passed the quiz, you can go to the last step:

#3 Write a 1/2 page summary of one particular STD including information on the following: 

  • Is the STD viral or bacterial? 
  • How is it treated? 
  • What ways are there to prevent getting the disease and/or transmitting it?


The Process

To accomplish the task, you must go through specific steps. Use the links you are given as they come up in your reading of this lesson.

#1 As you come across a link, click on it and read the information presented, then make a few notes as to what you have learned before you move on. (The notes will help you in the quiz. Click on the "Back" button to get back to the Webquest.

#2 What is! the difference between a virus   and a bacteria?

#3 Read about three sexually transmitted bacterial infections

     Chlamydia 
     Gonorrhea 
     Syphilis

You need to know three things about each :

  • How can they be prevented?
  • How are they transmitted?
  • How are they treated?
#4 Read about three sexually transmitted viral infections

     Herpes 
     HIV/Aids
     HPV/Warts

You need to know three things about each infection:

  • How can they be prevented?
  • How ar! e they transmitted?
  • How are they treated?
#5 Now that you are an expert, your group can take the online quiz.

#6 After you have finished the groupwork online, you are to work individually on the last portion of this assignment.

#7 Choose an STD that you have researched, and do the following on your own:

  • Name the STD
  • State whether it is a virus or a bacteria. 
  • Tell how it can be prevented, transmitted, and treated.

You will be graded as a group for your quiz work, and individually for your essay.
Description of STD with complete detail about how it's contracted, prevented and treated. Shows student has a total understanding of the disease.

Our hope is that upon completing this webquest, you have increased your knowledge about viruses and bacteria. We also hope that you have taken advantage of some of the websites listed, and have learned a little bit more about how to protect yourself and others from contracting STD's.
