The following are poems written by the sixth grade students from Sandra Woodruff and Marsi HogarthÕs homebase classroom. The poems were written in a period of ten minutes to the following prompt:

" Imagine that you are wearing a mood ring that can change to any color in the world but the color must represent your mood this morning. Choose the color of your ring, think about the mood that it represents and write a poem that shows the color and mood w ithout telling it."

Bright Things

I feel like the sun shining yellow
raindrops down to earth

I have a ring on that looks like
a gemstone sparkling in the sun's rays.

I feel like a banana tree that gives
people good things.

I have a ring on that imagines all these things.

A Sensational Color Feeling

As my ring turns bluer and bluer,
it reflects on the way I feel.
Blue, such a pretty color
I feel such delight, joy and happiness.

As the color blue get brighter and brighter
I get brighter and brighter
to myself the color, blue
stands out.

It stands out like a gorgeous
car in a junk yard.
People think "blue" actually
means sad.
But, to me, the meaning of
blue is so far beyond sad.

Happiness, joyful, delighted
or hyper
This reflects all on the
color, "blue."

Is Me

Green is pretty
Green is me
Green is grass on a warm spring day.

Blue is cool
Blue is me
Blue is the river trickling along happily.

Purple is tired
Purple is me
Purple is the sky as the sun sets.

Yellow is happy
Yellow is me
Yellow is the sun, smiling at me.

White is bare
White is me
White is a blank piece of paper.

The rainbow is bright
The rainbow does gleam
And most of all,
the rainbow is me.

Tears and Sadness

My mood ring is blue
I'm very sad this morning
just like the still rain.

Like a still blue lake
in the middle of
the forest
all alone.

Beautiful Rose

A very bright and shiny color
because I feel happy
pretty and colorful like
a vibrant flower in the
spring. I am feeling like
the hot, red sun.

All nice and shiny
shedding light everywhere
beautiful as a red, red
rose in a colorful
garden.

Being Alone

I am sad and so lonely,
being alone, and no one to care.
My mood today is unhappy,
like the color of the ocean late at night.

I feel I'm alone
under the moonlight
it's so quiet and so dim
no one to talk to.
My mood today is like the color
of the sky at night, a second after the sun
had set.
