Level II Education Specialist Credential Programs

Admission Requirements:

Completion of Level I Education Specialist Credential in Special Education (must be same area in which seeking Level II Credential); employment as a special education teacher; Level II application to the Special Education Department.  Students who did not obtain their Level I from SDSU must also apply to the University for admission as a graduate student.


Within the first 120 days of employment, development must begin on a Level II professional induction plan for the support and development of each beginning Level I teacher.


Prerequisites (7 units)

•  SPED 527, Special Education in a Pluralistic Society (3 units)

•  PLC 915A, Teaching and Learning in the Content Areas:  English Language Development/SDAIE) (3 units)

•  SPED 975, Professional Development Planning in Special Education (1 unit) to be taken the first semester of the program (development of the Professional Induction Plan)

Core Courses (2 units)

•  SPED 605, Advanced Behavioral and Health Supports (1 unit)

•  SPED 985, Professional Development: Reflections on Practice (1 unit) to be taken the last semester of the program

Mild/Moderate Disabilities Specialization (8 units)

•  SPED 634, Assessment: Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities (2 units)

•  SPED 651, Legislation, Leadership, and Management of Special Education Services (3 units)

•  SPED 653, Advanced Instruction, Collaboration, and Consultation in Special Education (2 units)

•  SPED 657, Facilitating Transitions (1 unit)

Moderate/Severe Disabilities Specialization (6 units)

•  SPED 654, Adapting Curriculum for Community Involvement and Generalization (2 units)

•  SPED 651, Legislation, Leadership, and Management for Special Education Services (3 units)

•  SPED 657, Facilitating Transitions (1 unit)

Early Childhood Special Education Specialization (6 units)

•  SPED 655, Leadership and Management in Early Childhood Special Education (3 units)

*  SPED 651, Legislation, Leadership, and Management for Special Education Services (3 units)

Additional requirements for the Professional Clear Level II Credential:

•  Required participation in approved non-university experience.  PCIP must have Evidence of Non-University Experience Form attached with signed approval by University Level II advisor and District Support Provider.

•  Completion of a course in Health Education, including, but not limited to, nutrition, the psychological and sociological effects of abuse of alcohol, narcotics and drugs, and the use of tobacco.  This requirement must include verification of training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which covers infant and child to adult CPR skills.  CPR certification must be completed while the applicant is in a teacher preparation program or is teaching on a valid credential based on a teacher education program.

•  SDSU course: HHS 280, Health Education for Teachers (1 unit)

•  Computer Literacy Requirement

•  SDSU course:  SPED 560 (requirement of SDSU Level I program).  Students who did not obtain their Level I from SDSU should see equivalency sheet for courses that fulfill this requirement.
