Important Announcement for those who hope to be hired with Internship Credentials:

To apply for the Internship Credential, based on amendments to Education Specialist Interships last month, Interns are now required to have English Learner and Language Arts Preparation (120 hours of practicum and course work in related areas) before beginning as an intern. If a student holds another credential issued before 2002, all of these requirements are met. If a student does not hold another credential, to become an Intern students must take SPED 500, 501, 502, 527, 915C, and Teacher Education 930 all of which are offered in the summer.  Throughout the program of study all courses are infused with English learner and multicultural competencies; Interns will need to demonstrate competencies related to multicultural diversity, English language learner instruction, and Language Arts instruction during every semester of their program.

We are pleased that you are interested in the Department of Special Education at San Diego State University. You are considering an important field at an exciting time, and there are many opportunities for special educators in our community and throughout the nation.
Please contact the Department Office for an application to our programs.

If you have not attended a Group Advising Session, you must do so if you live in the San Diego area.  They are held every 4 to 6 weeks.  Dates/times/locations are posted on this website.

Submitting your completed application form with all the attachments on or before the end of October (for Spring admission) or March (for Fall admission) ensures that your application will be in the first group reviewed by the faculty. That, of course, increases your chances of admission. Although our goal is to admit all well-qualified applicants, we give priority to those whose applications are completed within the first time period.

On your application you will be indicating whether you prefer the full-time or part-time program (Fall only). We recommend the full-time program, but understand that it is not possible for everyone. Both programs are designed to accommodate cohorts, and both follow a specific schedule. Although referred to as "part-time," that program requires approximately 11 units per term for 4 terms and you will be registered as a full-time student within the university. Both the full-time and part-time programs require experience (practica) with students receiving special education services in your credential area every term. If you elect the part-time program, you will take 5 additional units over the 2-year period to meet the practicum requirement. Spring is a three-semester program.

We look forward to receiving your completed application.
