ANNOUNCEMENTS

ELIGIBILITY NOTICE: Only students who have applied to, or are enrolled in, the SDSU Special Education Level I credential program are eligible for scholarship support.

Before applying for this scholarship, you should be aware of the terms and conditions associated with it. Please refer to the Scholarship Terms section below.



GENERAL INFO

This grant is specifically designed for students in San Diego County who are preparing to become urban special education teachers and have a specific interest in issues pertaining to literacy development. The grant provides unique preparation opportunities and scholarships to selected students, with a priority given to students who serve as Internship Credential teachers while completing their Educational Specialist coursework.   It is open to candidates preparing to teach students in either the M/M or M/S disabilities area.

The goals of this project are:

  • To increase the ethnic and linguistic diversity of the special education teaching force.
  • To encourage internship credential preparation of prospective special education teachers.
  • To provide special education teachers with extra training in literacy development.
The participating school districts on this project are San Diego Unified School District and Sweetwater Union High School District. Students who pursue an internship credential will do so at one of these participating districts. Financial support for the Summer semester is available for those students needing to fulfill program prerequisites before beginning in the Fall. The amount of Summer support is provided below, along with details regarding the academic year support package.

Financial Package (figures are approximate and subject to change)

Summer (for those needing to complete prerequisites):
Full CA resident fee support: up to $1287*
Books: $150
Living stipend: $250/week for six weeks
Total package: up to $2937

Each academic year semester:
Full CA resident fee support: up to $1936*
Living stipend: $500
Professional development: $75
Total package per semester: up to $2511

*fee amounts are accurate as of August, 2007 and are subject to change

SCHOLARSHIP TERMS AND CONDITIONS [note: to view pdf files, you must have Acrobat Reader, which can be dowloaded for free at www.adobe.com]

Students interested in applying for this scholarship should be aware that financial support comes with a service obligation. Specifically, the federal government will require you to teach special education in a public school after you receive your credential. If you fail to fulfill this obligation, you will be required to repay the scholarship support. Complete details are outlined in the file below. Please read it carefully to understand the obligation of all students who accept scholarship support.

Also, students who accept this scholarship must agree to abide by all program, department and university regulations. Specifically, the grant program will require you to attend workshops and presentations beyond the normal credential coursework (more details are provided in the application); the department and university also have requirements that must be met in order to remain in good standing. Students who do not meet these requirements are automatically ineligible for scholarship support.
