ANNOUNCEMENTS

Applications for the MA Degree Program can be obtained by going to the SDSU Department of Special Education website.

Applications for scholarship support are by nomination only. See the Application section below for more details.

Interested applicants should be aware of the terms and conditions associated with the scholarship. Please refer to the Scholarship Terms section below.



GENERAL INFO

The goals of this project are to:

  • Recruit and prepare MA degree students who are fully credentialed
  • Provide advanced knowledge and skills in autism using a research-to-practce model
  • Implement a field-based, culturally relevant program
  • Contribute to the field through candidates' research projects
Scholarship recipients receive financial support to offset the cost of school during the academic semesters and summer school, as necessary. The kinds of support are provided below, along with details regarding amounts.

Financial Package


***PLEASE NOTE: the figures quoted below are based on 04-05 figures and might be adjusted if the university raises its fees***

Summer :
Full CA resident fee support: up to $1026
Living stipend: $1000
Total package: up to $2026

Each academic year semester:
Full CA resident fee support: up to $1711 (depending on enrollment)
Living stipend: $500
Books allowance: $300
Total package per semester: up to $2511

For the entire program:
Professional development expenses: $1000
- allowable expenses include membership in professional organizations, subscriptions to professional journals, conference/workshop registration, etc.

Students interested in applying for this scholarship should be aware that financial support comes with a service obligation. Specifically, the federal government will require you to teach children with, or at risk for, disabilities after you complete the program. If you fail to fulfill this obligation, you will be required to repay the scholarship support. Complete details are outlined in the document below. Please read it carefully to understand the obligation of all students who accept scholarship support. All scholarship recipients will be required to sign a copy of this form before they can receive funds.

Also, students who accept this scholarship must agree to abide by all program, department and university regulations. Specifically, the grant program will require you to take certain classes in a certain sequence. The department and university also have requirements that must be met in order to remain in good standing. Students who do not meet these requirements are automatically ineligible for scholarship support.

Scholarship support is provided to applicants with the following priorities:

Applicants with a Level I special education teaching credential
Applicants from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds
Applicants who are nominated by SDSU Department of Special Education faculty or one of the collaborating partners:
+ San Diego Unified School District
+ Chula Vista School District
+ Children’s Hospital Toddler Program
+ The Institute for Effective Education


Nomination process:
The nominations are sent from SDSU Department of Special Education faculty or the collaborating partners (see above) to the project director. Applicants are encouraged to contact the following personnel if they work for, or are affiliated with, one of the partners.

+ Children’s Hospital Toddler Program – Melissa Katz
+ The Institute for Effective Education – Suzy Fitch
