GENERAL INFO

This grant is specifically designed for students in Imperial County who are interested in becoming special education teachers. The grant provides funds for much of the credential coursework offered in Imperial County and provides scholarships to students who serve as Internship Credential teachers while pursuing a Level I Education Specialist Credential in Mild-Moderate Disabilities.  Individuals interested in becoming teachers in the area of Moderate/Severe Disabilities may also participate in the program, although they may be required to take specific specialization courses at the San Diego campus. 

The goals of the project are:

  • To increase the ethnic and linguistic diversity of the special education teaching force in Imperial County.
  • To encourage internship credential preparation of prospective special education teachers in Imperial County.
  • To prepare fully credentialed special education teachers to fill vacancies in Imperial County school districts.
Financial support for the Summer semester at the main campus in San Diego is available for those students needing to fulfill program prerequisites before beginning in the Fall. The amount of Summer support is provided below, along with details regarding the academic year support package.

Financial Package


***PLEASE NOTE: the figure quoted below are based on 04-05 figures and will be adjusted to reflect the new fee structure when it's announced***

Summer (for those needing to complete prerequisites at the San Diego campus):
Full CA resident fee support: up to $1287
Living stipend: $200/week for six weeks
Total package: up to $2487

Each academic year semester:
Full CA resident fee support: up to $1420
Living stipend: $350 (only students on internship credentials are eligible for this)
Total package per semester: up to $1770

SCHOLARSHIP TERMS AND CONDITIONS [note: to view pdf files, you must have Acrobat Reader, which can be dowloaded for free at www.adobe.com]

Students interested in applying for this scholarship should be aware that financial support comes with a service obligation. Specifically, the federal government will require you to teach special education in a public school after you receive your credential. If you fail to fulfill this obligation, you will be required to repay the scholarship support. Complete details are outlined in the file below. Please read it carefully to understand the obligation of all students who accept scholarship support.

Also, students who accept this scholarship must agree to abide by all program, department and university regulations. Specifically, the grant program will require you to take certain classes in a certain sequence (more details are provided in the application); the department and university also have requirements that must be met in order to remain in good standing. Students who do not meet these requirements are automatically ineligible for scholarship support.
