THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY California Reading Certificate

California Reading Certificate

The Reading Certificate program at SDSU is accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The program is intended to improve K-12 classroom teacher and community college instructor expertise for literacy instruction from emergent through adolescence and adult levels. SDSU offers the Reading Certificate both through traditional, face-to-face instruction during the fall and winter semesters, and as an online only, distance education program completed in two summers. Prospective students should submit an application to one of these programs no later than April 1st. GRE scores are not required for admission to the Reading Certificate program.

• The 13-unit program addresses direct instruction in specific skills and strategies; formal and informal literacy assessment; knowledge about reading and writing across content areas; the role of writing in learning; and student motivation and engagement through reading, writing, and discussion. Graduates of the program are better prepared to teach reading and writing effectively to diverse students.

• To be eligible to apply for the Reading Certificate from the CCTC after completion of coursework, the candidate must also have a valid California teaching credential and a minimum of 3 years of full-time K-12 teaching experience. The three years of teaching experience can include substitute or part time teaching, and can be accrued during or after completion of courses for the Certificate.

• Courses for the Reading Certificate can also be applied to the MA in Reading Education and Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential programs at SDSU, upon the candidate’s acceptance into these programs. Students admitted to the MA in Teaching program can choose to complete the Reading Certificate as their area of concentration.

• Required Courses:

TE 635 Assessment of Reading and Language Arts (3)
TE 636 Advanced Assessment of Reading and Language Arts (3)
TE 637 Instructional Strategies for Reading and Language Arts (4)
TE 639 Literacy and Language (3)
