ESL instructor, studying in the Teacher Education department (For English) at SDSU.

Background

I was raised in San Diego, and attended college here. I worked various jobs before graduating, including construction, retail and surfboard repair. After graduation, my wife and I spent a year abroad, travelling in Europe and eventually finding work in Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa, where we spent 7 months. During this time, I began teaching ESL for the first time, and worked with a development program designed to reduce childhood malnutrition in the area around Abidjan.

On returning to the States, I continued teaching ESL and as a substitute teacher.

Interests, Activities & Plans

Professionally, I would like to continue with a career in Education at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. I plan to return to school to get my Ph.D. in cultural anthropology, specializing in literary transformations in oral societies. I spend most of my spare time outdoors, surfing, diving, or hiking and camping in the region. My general interests also include theatre, history, art (particularly African) and the ecology. I plan to continue to travel, and would like to drive from San Diego to Central America sometime in the next several years.

Other Interesting Things

I think it's been pretty well covered. I'm bilingual in English and French, and have travelled quite a bit in Europe and West Africa. My hobbies are mostly oriented around the ocean, but I try to stay open to anything new. My favorite author is Nathaniel Hawthorne, my favorite magazine is Longboarder, and musically I like everything from punk to ska and a lot of old jazz.
