SDSU graduate working on an English teaching credential. Will return to SDSU to work on a Master's in Deaf Education after receiving my credential.

Background

I was born and raised in San Diego. I attended high school at Castle Park High in the Sweetwater Union High School District. After graduation I went immediately to San Diego State University where my brother also attended school. My first job was working for my grandfather's property management company. I have also worked as a tutor for ALI (American Language Institute) students at SDSU, and as a tutor for the deaf. I currently work part time at the Malcolm A. Love Library at SDSU. I hope to have the opportunity in the near future to attend Mesa College and finish working on my interpreting certificate for the deaf.

Interests, Activities & Plans

I am interested in the field of education and where it is heading. My particular interest is in getting the students to appreciate and understand some of the subjects they dread. For example, helping them to appreciate literature as more then just big books with words. I am currently interested in learning more about successful techniques in the classroom, and how to relate to the students. I am especially interested in the field of Deaf Education where I see a big need for improvements. I have plunged into researching the history and present ideas that surround the education of the deaf. I have also attended many conferences which have dealt with the topic. In the future I hope I will be working with deaf students at the high school level, and I hope that I can help to promote better hiring and training practices for teachers of the deaf.

Other Interesting Things

I love to go skiing and rollerblading (even though I have had my share of accidents at both). I enjoy being in the kitchen cooking, but find with school and work there isn't always enough time. I love to go dancing on the weekends with my friends, but that usually ends with the beginning of a new semester. My biggest passion is for travelling. Every year I try to take a few trips to places I either love or never have seen but want to. I only wish I had more time and money to travel because there is still a lot of the world I want to experience. I am saving up for my next trip which will hopefully be a Safari in Africa, but that will have to wait until next summer.
