Student Teacher, O'Farrell Community School (Life Sciences)

Background

I was brought up in the suburbs in the San Francisco Bay Area. As I grew older, I wanted to learn more about other cultures and languages, so I spent one semester of high school and my first year of college in Mexico. I then returned to California and graduated with bachelor's degrees in biology and psychology from UC San Diego. Following graduation, I worked as a paralegal before attending law school at UCLA. After five years of lawyering, mostly in civil litigation, I realized that I enjoyed teaching people more than suing them, so I enrolled at the teacher education program at San Diego State University.

Interests, Activities & Plans

My primary goal as a teacher is to teach science to Spanish-speaking students. Hopefully, I will help these students appreciate science, and understand its applicability to their lives. As a practical matter, these students will be more likely to take the required science classes if they are allowed to read and understand science in Spanish.

As a former consumer attorney, I also believe that many young people do not understand how the law impacts their lives. Long-term, I will try to incorporate a class in legal education into the high school curriculum.

Other Interesting Things

I am a sports fanatic. I love to play basketball, softball -just about anything. I also enjoy animals, and I have fish and three cats. Now that I am moving into a house, I hope to add a dog and some birds.
