O'Farrell Community School Student Teacher Social Science and English.
- B.A. Communications-Religious Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara.
Background
I was born in La Mesa, California, and grew up in the Fletcher Hills area. I graduated from O'Farrell in 1987 when it was the School of Creative and Performing Arts. My interest was writing. I attended San Diego State Univeristy for two years and transferred to Park College in Kansas City, Mo. I played soccer and began my interest in journalism. In 1991, I transferred to U.C. Santa Barbara where I was active writing for the school newspaper, The Daily Nexus. Here I won first place in the California Intercollegiate Press Association Awards for best news story in 1992. After graduation in 1993, I worked for a local San Diego-East County newspaper, the Daily Californian. After applying to several schools for law, I decided to pursue a career in teaching. I spent last year working with eight 8th graders from O'Farrell in the Talent Search program. The program is college prep for under-priveledged kids with lots of potential. The work I did with these kids has given me more life experience and professional experience than six years of college ever did. I loved it so much that I requested to come to O'Farrell for my teaching block this year.
Interests, Activities & Plans
I presently want to finish my credential program here at O'Farrell in Social Science and English. After finishing the program I would like to find a position in the San Diego area, preferrably in the East County, since this is where I grew up. I would like to be as active as I can at each campus I work at, and extend my responsibilities out of the classroom. Possibly teach journalism, yearbook, or be involved with a soccer team. I would also like to encourage community consciousness and promote community service at the campus I will be working.
Other Interesting Things
Though I often do not have time for many activities due to school and work, I am a very active person outside of these first two responsibilities. I love to bike near the lake by my home, and try to catch a step-aerobics class when I can. I am often engrossed in one of Anne Rice's series, and am presently finishing the second book in her witches' series "Lasher". I have done quite a bit of travelling while in college and hope to continue my travels when I (hopefully) get a job. I have travelled through most of the United States, and spent the summer after college backbacking Europe with my best friend who is presently receiving her Masters at Santa Clara Univeristy in Psychology. We made stops in London, France, Spain (saw the running of the bulls in Paplona), Italy, Greece (Corfu), Germany (my homeland), and Switzerland. I hope to spend extensive time in Germany in the future. My live-in boyfriend, who is also German, is curently receiving his MBA in finance at San Diego State Univeristy. After he graduates in December, he hopes to find a job in San Diego.
