Interview Protocol

At some point during the expedition, you need to interview someone that you meet, either in a public place or at your residential stop. Introduce yourself as a SDSU student teacher beginning your year at O'Farrell or Morse and ask if they wouldn't mind helping you with a class assignment that will take just a couple of minutes. It goes without saying that you'll be polite and sensitive, of course.

About Your Informant

What is their name? (Tell them that their full name will not be used in your report.) How long have they lived or worked here? What's their occupation?

1. O'Farrell/Morse Students

Ask them if they've had any exposure to O'Farrell or Morse students. If so, for each group ask this: If you had to describe (O'Farrell/Morse) students in just five words, what words would you use? Ask for details and any additional opinions or impressions.

2. O'Farrell/Morse Schools

If you had to describe O'Farrell/Morse in just five words, what words would you use? Probe for additional details, impressions, and opinions. Ask if they've ever been inside either place.

3. The Community

What is it like to live in this community? What are its good features? What problems are there? Where do adults shop, eat, worship, hang out? What about kids?

4. Teachers

Ask them what advice they could give to you as a beginning teacher? What should teachers do for the children of this community? What should they avoid?

When you're done, thank them very much for their help in this assignment.
