Ask Something

Peer Editing

Day Five

by: Jodie Rader

Objectives: Students will have an understanding of the corrections their papers may need. Students will learn how to make useful and purposeful comments.

Procedure: Have students get into groups of four. Give each students a copy of the rubric. Students will read each others rough drafts. Editors should follow the criteria outlined in the rubric and ask questions about the paper they are reading. Every member in the group should read everyone's papers asking two questions and two comments. The teacher should review with students how to ask helpful questions. Suggest such phrases as:

  • "What do you mean by...?"
  • "How does this relate to...?"
  • "Can you clarify...?"
  • "I don't understand..."

When a students gets their papers back there should be at least six questions and six comments. Give the writers an opportunity to ask any questions of the editors.

The teacher should monitor the groups and be available to read and make comments as well. They may also help by asking thought provoking questions to the readers and writers.

Students should then begin on their final drafts. If computers are available have students begin typing their papers.

Closure: For homework students will finish their papers and turn them in the next class period. Check and see if there are any students who would like to have you read their papers.
