The Olympics are a global event involving athletes from all over the world who train for years to have an opportunity to compete. Some of these people spend many years of their lives to, sometimes, spend only minutes or seconds competing. What kind of people are willing to face the many sacrifices, the fierce competition, the misery of defeat or the sweet taste of victory? |

Here is an opportinity for you to not only find out about the Winter Olympics and the Summer Olympics, but to explore the highly motivated athletes who strive to compete in the events.
The Investigation 
There are over 200 types of events in the Olympics with more than 10,000 participants.
Explore some of the types of events in the Olympics. Maybe you have a favorite event and want to find out more about it. Choose an event that interests you and learn more about it.
Take some time to discover some of the athletes who desire a gold medal and make many sacrifices just to get a chance at winning one. Find out about their motivation, their drive and their goals. Learn about the hardships they came up against and the pain they endured.
The assignment
Once you have done some delving, choose an athlete you learned about and write a letter to them. This letter can be in the form of fan mail, but you will also want to include any questions you may have or incidents about your own life you would like to relate to the athlete.
