It is night and you and your fellow islanders are sitting around the fire. Your job is to create a story that explains how your island came into existence. This should be a story that could be told to young children in an effort to explain how their island was created.
Day 1,2
You will begin working on your own creation stories by taking a look at a few examples. This will help you to gather ideas.
Next, you will be reading stories out of the book, In the Beginning, Creation Stories from around the World, by Virginia Hamilton. For this assignment you should be split up in groups according to the island you were assigned. In your island groups you will read 4 stories. Each person in the group will read their story and then re-tell it to the other members of the group. Group members will then put together a list of similarities and differences between the stories.
After completing this part of the task, you will then be asked to present your lists of similarities and differences. The sharing of the lists should help put together a class list that will work as a guide when creating your own myth.
Day 3,4
Each group will be responsible for writing a creation story for their island. It should be about two pages long and it should creatively explain how your island came into existence. You will be required to have two rough drafts before the final copy and one illustration.
Day 5
Now that your myth is written, your group members and you will be required to make a poster, create a story board, act it out through readers theater, or think up an original way of presenting your myth to the class.
Once all the myths are turned in, a class book will be made of all our stories and illustrations.
