National Symbols

Your island is to be a French Territory. Islanders will want to have their own government and rules. After careful consideration the French have decided to let you run your own island on the condition that the official language will still be French. You will be asked to create several important pieces of your island's culture, in French of course!

The task Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5

The Task

Research the various cultural aspects of French departments, territories, and French speaking regions. Based on this research you are to write a Bill of Rights for your island proudly displaying your freedom.

Remember before you can write a Bill of rights you must first understand the culture of your island. Think about various national symbols you're familiar with. What comes to mind when foreigners think about the United States? The Statue of Liberty, hot dogs, and baseball is a common combination that comes to mind. This is what you are to create for your island, a series of symbols that represent your culture.

The Process:

Day One:

Be a tourist for a day, eat the food & see the sights! Take a virtual voyage to countries and places you've dreamed about. Try visiting a few of these web sites to start. In Paris go to museums in Paris, popular cafés in Paris. Visit my favorite museum, try out some music. Get a glimpse into Pariscope, a popular magazine, go to the market or visit a popular vacation resort.

Remember you will need to hand in a vocabulary list filled with new French words you discovered while on this trip(15 words minimum). And finally complete this word search search.

Day Three:

Formulate a Bill of Rights. Get together with your group and discuss what you feel the most important rights a human being should have. Formulate your ideas into a bill of rights for your island.

Remember this must be written in French!

Day Four:

Today you will design a Flag for your island. Remember flags are an important national symbol. Pay close attention to the flags displayed in this page, research other flags of the world. Design a flag that represents the culture and people of your island. Ask yourself what the different colors and graphics on a flag means(go back to your reserach and Encarta for details on what the colors and symbols of flags represent). Next, in an essay written in French explain how the symbolism of your flag reflects the values expressed in your Bill of Rights.
