I started the credential program at San Diego State University in the summer of 1996. I am currently wrapping up the program and ready to get out into the "real world" of teaching.

Background

Born in New York, I moved to San Diego at five years of age. I have lived in Southern California since and have lost my New York accent. Currently, I am employed as an office manager in a pediatric office in San Diego. I have worked with children throughout my life and have grown to love children, mathematics and computers. Deciding long ago to combine my interests, I found myself eventually in the teaching credential program, after receiving my B.A. degree in mathematics from San Diego State University.

Ready to begin my life-long dream of becoming a teacher, I was both excited and nervous to start my student teaching at O'Farrell. Luckily, the program paired me up with a great master teacher, Rev. Dwight Sykes. With his help and support I was able to make a smooth transition from the "doctor's office" to the "classroom". I am just coming to the end of a stressful yet gratifying year full of learning, excitement, tears and "pulling hair". As the year progresses, I realize just how much I do belong here in the classroom. I am anxious to start my new career as a middle or high school math teacher.

Interests, Activities & Plans

Outside of the classroom, I was fortunate enough to gain membership into the Student Advisory Councel at SDSU. Geared to help future student teachers, the SAC began a scholarship fund through the organization of volunteer members like myself.

In addition, this year I co-founded a mentorship program at O'Farrell Community School called "Partners". With assistance from the Family Support Services on campus, and two other student teachers(Elizabeth Wong and Kendra Tutunjian) I was able to produce a program rooted to help at-risk students through modeling, support and friendship. These students were able to participate in extracurricular activites like a field trip to SDSU and hiking trips in the local Cuyamaca Mountains.

Although I normally find myself engrossed in school, I do find time to enjoy such activities as: traveling, cooking, camping and walking on the beach. Traveling is my most rewarding past time. Over the course of this school year I have visited exciting places like Singapore, Las Vegas, San Francisco and "Baja." I have also organized camping trips and various beach excursions with the O'Farrell and Morse student teacher blocks.
