Student teacher at O'Farrell Community School in English.

Background

I grew up mainly in Blacksburg, Virginia, a small college town in southwestern Virginia. After high school, I first attended Columbia University in New York, then dropped out after one year and moved to San Diego, where I eventually finished a B.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing and a minor in philosophy in 1987. For the past nine years, I have worked a variety of jobs from truckdriver to cabinetmaker while attempting to develop my writing. Now married, my wife Michelle and I live with our two daughters, Hannah, 6, and Chelsea, 4, in Santee.

Interests, Activities & Plans

My current professional goals include completing my teaching credential at SDSU and teaching English at a public high school. I believe that the power of great literature can help students to make sense of the world around them and also help them discover who they are, as it has for me. I also hope to coach wrestling at the high school level since that sport was a love of mine during my own high school years. In the future, besides teaching, I hope to continue writing and work on an M.F.A., ultimately publishing my work.

Other Interesting Things

Besides the main joy in my life, spending time with my family, I love travelling, particularly long, loosely planned driving excursions. I also enjoy discovering new, compelling literature and writing, other creative activities and athletics, and woodworking. Reserved by nature, I am content to pass the time observing and listening to my surroundings, and discussing what I find with my friends in search of understanding our increasingly complex (and often perplexingly disturbing) world.

Other Places in Webspace

Admittedly skeptical about computers and the seemingly unrestricted ways they are infiltrating society and culture, I have consciously avoided using them as much as possible, while at the same time watching how others use them with interest. As such, I do not have my own computer capable of accessing the "web" and therefore have never visited any sites.
