Module 3: Online Student Learning Activities
Introduction to the Quest
Task
Have you ever had a students in your class who just don't get excited about the material? Maybe it's because they lack background knowledge; maybe it's that they are distracted by other life concerns; or maybe it's just that they aren't motivated by the presentation. Imagine for a moment how these students may react if you could provide them with the opportunity to explore relevant material to your topic, but through the sights and sounds of an interactive computer. This activity will help you see how this can be done through the use of an online activity known as a WebQuest.
A set of WebQuests, created by students in the Educational Technology Department of San Diego State University, teachers in public schools, and Pac Bell Education First Fellows, are listed below. Look for at least two in which you might have an interest. Explore these WebQuests, then think about answers the following questions. You will be asked to comment on the questions at the bottom of this page.
- Which two WebQuests did you examine?
- Describe what you noticed as the main two similarities between the activities.
- Other than content, describe what you noticed as the main differences between the activities.
- Which activity did you find most engaging? What did you find engaging about this activity?
- Through which activity do you think students would learn the most? What characteristics lead you to this belief?
Advice
You should probably spend about five to ten minutes on the two WebQuest of your choice. Read through the text and try a couple of links. Be sure to look at the task, but don't feel you need to research each of the questions.
