Module 4: Building An Online Community

Whereas a ListServ allows you the opportunity to send and receive messages from an entire group, it is problematic in that messages seldom follow an easily identified theme (often called a "thread"). A Newsgroup, on the other hand, provides students the ability to "attach" one thought directly to another. This allows all students the ability to read through and comment on a variety of threads, without getting messages intertwined.
Over 5000 Newsgroups and 70,000 ListServs exist at an international level, and cover all subject domains. Use these job aids to subscribe to one or more of these Newsgroups and ListServs.
Newsgroups also exist on most campuses, and can be created for specific classes. Unfortunately, these newsgroups can only be established at an administrative level. Contact your network administrator to see how to set up a newsgroup on your campus.
Finally, please help us improve this module by taking a moment or two to complete a brief evaluation form. Thank you!
