Module 4: Building An Online Community
Communication is the action with which communities express common beliefs, goals, and understanding (Dewey, 1916). In this module we've provided three ways to increase communication in an online community: through email, sending documents, and listserves.

- Although most of our students now have access to email through the university, it is sometimes hard to get them in the habit of using this modality. What strategies could you offer other instructors as to how they can encourage their students to access their accounts?
- Establishing a ListServ is more problematic than simply using an address book to send information to groups of students. What type of opportunities or problems need to be present for an instructor to go to the extra work of creating a ListServ?
