Creating a "Virtual" Class Listserv

Purpose

The purpose of a listserve is to allow a person (such as a student) to send a message to every other person who belongs to the list (such as the other members of the class). Although this is normally set up with specific software by a system's administrator, Eudora allows the procedure to be handled through your email account. Listservs can be set up for all of your students, a department, or a specific groups of colleagues. To do this procedure, you should already know how to set up mailboxes, address books, and filters. Please not that this process can only be done with Eudora Pro, not Eudora Light.

Establish the filter

Step 1: Access Special from the menu bar and select Filters.
Step 2: Create a new filter.
Step 3: Place "Subject" in the Header
Step 4: Enter "To the list" in the box to the right of the word "contains." (Note: Ask your students to place the phrase "To the list" in the subject line for any messages they want forwarded to all other members of the class).

Transfer and forward

Step 1: Select "Transfer to" in the action box
Step 2: Select the appropriate mailbox (see the Filters job aid for assistance)
Step 3: Select "Forward to" in the second box
Step 4: Enter the name of the address book or individuals (Note: you can copy and paste from the "Address Book").

When messages are received with the phrase "To the list" in the subject line, they will be forwarded to your Out Mailbox, ready to be sent the next time you check your mail or send messages.

Additional options

You can have your machine automatically send these messages without you (there are advantages and disadvantages in doing this). To create this feature,

Step 1: Access Special from the menu bar,
Step 2: Select Settings,
Step 3: Choose "Checking Mail" from the left column,
Step 4: Select "Check for mail every" and place 60 minutes in the right column.
Step 5: Select "Send on check" in the same column.

Any messages that come in with the proper subject line will be sent out at the next mail check one hour later.
