Military History, Sentinels of a troubled time . . .
Point Loma's strategic location and the need for harbor defense before and during two World Wars led to the construction of small and large caliber gun positions all along the Point. At Cabrillo National Monument can be seen the remains of base-end and fire control station bunkers used to aim the big six and sixteen inch guns that guarded the port. Also in the park are the remains of search light bunkers, a radio shack, and other testaments to troubled times.
