My research interests involve helping precollege teachers and higher education faculty to construct a science classroom environment that encourages girls and members of underrepresented groups to have a positive attitude toward science as a discipline and as a profession. I am also interested in curriculum that develops visual/spatial thinking skills. All of my research and teaching is targeted toward what we know about science teaching and learning, and language acquisition. How individuals construct their knowledge and understanding of science continues to be a driving force behind my research questions.

Along with a colleague, I conducted workshops in Dalian, China. Participants were professors of biological sciences from various provinces in China. In addition to the daily lecture/discussion sessions, participants in the biological sciences workshops conducted mini-research projects.
