Lesson 1 Language Arts

Our primary naval unit contacted us yesterday with their whereabouts. We hoped to see them in two days as they would soon land on the southern tip of Florida, where the rest of our crew had been stationed. They told us that the seas had been generously calm for five days and the good weather indicated that this pattern would continue. They couldn't have been farther from the truth...

created by Kendra Tutunjian and Liz Wong

Objective

The students will be introduced to the mythical Bermuda Triangle. The students will read A Brief History of the Devil's Triangle. The students will create their own story about an incident involving the area.

Lesson

Divide the class into Triangle teams. These teams will work competitively to attain points which will earn them a reward at the end of the unit. As a class, read the history of the Triangle using pair-share methods. The students will volunteer to read which will earn them points. After one student reads, another student can raise their hand and ask a question for the members of the class to answer. The students who ask and answer the question will earn a point each for their involvement.

Activity

The students will review what they have read by answering questions about the information. In their triangle teams, the students will participate in Triangle Trivia.
  1. Each triangle team will be given a large piece of construction paper.
  2. The team will label the top of their paper as follows: Answers Wage Score
  3. Each team will start with $500
  4. They will then decide upon a wager that may not exceed their total score.
  5. They will write their wager under the WAGE heading.
  6. The teacher must instruct the teams to hold up their sheet to display their wage.
  7. Once the teacher quickly looks at each teams wagers, the teacher will ask a question regarding the reading.
  8. The teams will write their answer below the ANSWER heading.
  9. The teacher will go around and check everyone's answer. If the team is correct, they add the amount that they waged to their score. If the team is incorrect, they must subtract their wage.
  10. The team with the highest score wins points that will be added onto the week long competition.

Homework

The students must create a short story on an event that might have taken place in the Bermuda Triangle.
