Objective

Finding the area and perimeter of the Bermuda Triangle using ratios.

Anticipatory Set

"How big is the Bermuda Triangle?"

Resources

  • Overhead map of Utah with conversion scale.
  • Map of the Bermuda Triangle (one for each group.)
  • Rulers
  • Calculators

    Guided Practice

    1. Review Area and Perimeter of regular triangles and rectangles. Remind the students of the conversion of measurements to distances needed to find actual distances.
    2. With overhead of a map of the U.S., have students use an overhead ruler to find the distances of all four sides of the rectangular state of Utah.
    3. As a class transfer measured distances to mileage and calculate the area and perimeter of the state of Utah.
    4. Allowing the students to work in groups of three (a triangular group) give each group a copied map of Bermuda Triangle and a ruler.
    5. Tell the students "Beware of the Triangle!"
    6. Give the students ample time to measure, convert and find area and perimeter of the triangular region.
    7. The students will record their findings on a chart on the board to compare with the findings of other groups in the class.
    8. Finally, list the actual area and perimeter of the Bermuda Triangle.

    Evaluation

At the end of today's lesson the group will again be evaluated by participation. The student group which comes the closest to the actual numbers wins a soft drink.
