Introduction

It's summer time and you have decided to go on a recreational diving trip with 3 to 4 of your classmates. Before you go, however, you must research all the physical aspects related to your dive. You will examine the physical demands that will be placed on your body as well as ways you can make yourself physically fit for the dive. Before your dive, you will begin to explore rules for safety and the physical contraindications related to diving.

The Task

At the end of the week of study students' will be able to:

Resources

Find out what "SCUBA" stands for, why you need to physically fit to dive and other related aspects of diving at Scuba Diving Explained. Examine the muscles of the human body and exercises for those muscles at WorldGuide Anatomy. Find other exercises at the Exercise and Strength Training page. To examine the physical contraindications related to diving, check out Fitness for Diving.

You can also check out a few of these exciting dive sites:

The Process

Working with your diving team:

  1. Check out Scuba Diving Explained and learn a bit about recreational diving, as well as the other types of diving. (Be sure to check out "Recreational Scuba Diving: An Overview" and "Medical Fitness for Diving")
  2. As a group, list the 3 reasons that being physically fit will help a diver. This list should come from a group discussion using information you have learned about diving to this point and knowledge you have on swimming.
  3. List 5 major muscles that are used when diving. (Example: Pectorals) Use the WorldGuide Anatomy for muscle names. Note: There is very little arm action in diving compared to swimming.
  4. Design an exercise program which targets the muscles that you have chosen. (Minimum of 5 exercises) This program should include the name of the exercise and the muscle or muscles that are being targeted.
  5. Make a list of 5 contraindications related to diving. This list should include medical reasons that would restrict an individual from diving.

To assure that each member is involved, assign different tasks during your discussions. The 3 reasons for being physically fit when diving should be agreed upon by each member. During this meeting each member of your team should choose a muscle that is used when diving and be responsible for finding an exercise that targets that muscle.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on the completion of the given assigments. You will be graded as a team. In other words, it is important that all members are involved. Completion of each of the 4 tasks is worth 25 points for a total of 100.

Conclusion

By completing these assignments I hope you have learned a little bit about Recreational Diving and other forms of diving as well. As you have found there are many things to consider when engaging in a new sport/activity. In what other activities could we (The class) use this type of assignment?
