Introduction

Congratulations! You have completed the basic training of recreational diving and are now ready to take your dive. This week we will explore how we effect the environment as well as other factors that effect the environment (this will be accomplished through our field trip and survey at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography). Through our training we will make diving safe and fun for ourselves and the marine life we encounter.

The Task

After this week of activity students will:

Resources

Find information on reef ecosystems and the effect that divers have at Ecosystem. Check out a Dying Sea to find out about illegal fishing. Also take a look at Abalone Poaching to learn more about illegal fishing. Find out how divers can help the environment at The Coral Reef Alliance

Check out these sites as well:
  • PADI
  • Sea World
  • Lost Frontier

    The Process

    1. You will be putting together a survey about the environment (in relation to the ocean and diving) to use when we go to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. This survey should have a central theme with subquestions that lead to a conclusion about your central theme (i.e..
    2. While at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, fill out your survey by asking the guides your subquestions.
    3. Make a conclusion about your central theme using the data gathered in the survey. You may use this form to organize your thoughts.
    4. Present your findings about the underwater environment on poster paper to the class.

    Evaluation

You will be evaluated by the quality of your completed survey, your presentation, and your conclusion about your central theme.

    Conclusion

You will have developed an understanding that there can be many aspects to a main idea. You will also have conducted a survey and come to a conclusion drawn from you data. And presented your ideas in front of your class.
