Introduction

You have written your biography, now it's time to bring your explorer to life. You will search through written and internet documents to dig deeper into the lives of your explorer. You will search for documents written by your explorer or members of the crew. You may also find documents that show or explain about the ships that your explorer used.

The Task

You will create a display chronicling the life and achievements of an explorer. The students will create this display using a variety of assignments.

Resources

Use search engines to find information regarding your explorer on the internet. The following websites will help you find ideas for your primary sources, create your artifacts, and find other information.

The Process

  1. Search for information regarding the explorer you have chosen.
  2. Create a chronolgy of 8 important events in your explorers life. You may include the explorers birth, major achievements, or death. You decide which events to include.
  3. Using a map the teacher will provide, you will chart the journeys that your explorer made. If your explorer made multiple voyages, be sure to chart each trip.
  4. Find at least two primary source documents regarding your explorer. You may find this material from a written source or on the internet.
  5. Create an artifact that could be linked to your explorer. You can draw pictures, make a model, or print pictures from the internet.
  6. Paste or glue all of the assignments listed above on the poster board that the teacher will provide.

Evaluation

Your biography board will be graded as an accumulation of all the assignments you display on your poster board. Each assignment that you post on your biography board will be worth an equal amount of points. Each assignment will be graded on historical accuracy and content.

Conclusion

Your completed biography board will provide you with greater insight into the life and discoveries of your explorer. You will also be introduced to first hand accounts of exploration and see illustrations of the ships your explorer used. Hopefully, you will enjoy your exploration into the past.
