Introduction

In groups of three, each student from each group will take the VALS Self-Evaluation Survey that is located on the Internet.

The Task

Resources

It is necessary to have a computer with Internet access available. VALS This is the website where the survey is located. You will need to access this site through the Internet.

The Process

  1. You will be assigned a group with two other individuals.
  2. Each person from your group will take the VALS Self-Evaluation survey.
  3. After your group has completed the survey, you will look up your survey results and where each of you fit in on the VALS2.
  4. Next, your group will need to create their own survey similar to the one that you just took, either by hand or on the computer.
  5. Circulate the survey to the other students in your class and include the teacher(s).
  6. Then, you will need to tally the data gathered and come up with the best way to present the statistics that have just been created (ie. circle graph, bar graph, compilation of similar survey data, etc).
  7. You and your group need to explain how statistics are related to media. Think about how advertising is used throughout the media.

Evaluation

You will be given a group grade on this project. So, everyone in your group needs to participate. Your originality of your survey and how you present the data will be what your grade is based on.

Conclusion

Students will use their creative and critical thinking skills during this lesson. They will need to develop their own survey and discover how statistics are used in media.
