Introduction

This week the students will be introduced to the measures of central tendency to include mean, median, and mode.

The Task

By the end of the week the students will know:

The differences between mean, median, and mode.
How to find the mean, median, and mode.
The difference between discrete and continuous data.
How to convert Farenheit to Celsius, what a knot is, and how air pressure is measured.

Resources

The main resources you will use for this task is the information you received from Mawson Weather Station, your math skills, calculators, and applicable worksheets.

The Process

To accomplish this task you will need to complete the following:

Split students into groups of four.
To each group, give real world sets of data. Make sure students are familiar with their calculators.
Allow the students to work as a group to answer the questions related to the data sets.
Show the students that one measure might be a better indicator to use than another.
Let the students show their measures in graphical form.
Receive conversion tables from the net.

Learning Advice

When working with real world data sets make sure the students know the difference between discrete and continuous data and how to apply this knowledge. When working with different units, remember to keep track.

Evaluation

They will be graded on the accuracy of their measures of central tendency's accuracy. They will also be graded on their group participation.

Conclusion

By the end of this week the students should be able to organize data into the three measures of central tendency, know how to change Fahrenheit to Celsius, know the difference between discrete and continuous data, and be able to graph this information.
