The following are guidelines that should be followed in order to ensure mutually beneficial experiences for both student and clients.
As the client, you will need to:
Orient the student to your work and setting; acquaint him/her with the people with whom s/he will be working, the environment, and any other overall policies that s/he should know up-front. If the intern understands your goals and formal and informal rules, the experience will be both successful and safe.
Identify a skilled and willing senior person to serve as the mentor--the key contact for the intern. In our view, a mentor is someone highly familiar with the organization and significantly more skilled and knowledgeable than the intern regarding tasks or responsibilities to which he or she will be assigned. A mentor should be enthusiastic about supervising the intern.
- Provide your intern with access to subject matter experts in the field.
- Work with the Educational Technology faculty advisor and the student intern to negotiate the Internship Contract. The EDTEC advisor will review the draft and communicate with you via the student.
- Provide your intern with regular guidance, support and feedback about job performance.
- Finance the salary agreed upon in the contract.
- Establish regular meetings with the intern. Be rigorous and expect quality.
In return, you will receive:
- 180 working hours from someone formally trained in a variety of areas associated with educational technology.
- Another set of perspectives, skills and problem-solving abilities to bolster quality and productivity.
- A relationship with a nationally recognized program, including support from the EDTEC faculty advisor should a problem arise.
- A potential full-time employee who would come to that position prepared to hit the ground running. (That is, of course, negotiable. There is no formal expectation that the intern would continue with the organization after the internship experience.)
- An opportunity to share your expertise and the good works of your organization with an eager learner.
