ED 690

All about Survey Agenda

Item#

We'll begin by thinking reflectively about the readings you've been assigned so far -- emerging themes and ideas; areas of confusion; connections to other EdTec courses you've completed ... or your own personal areas of expertise; operational issues; etc.
Then I've prepared a comprehensive handout about surveys that will serve you well (I believe) over the long haul!
I've also uploaded a far briefer handout that focuses on response sets you might want to consider when you're develping intensity-scaled items.
We'll practice writing different kinds of items ... and "judge" their quality; our "source material " will be surveys I've received in the mail as well as those used in recent evaluation projects with which I'm familiar.

And ... of course ... we'll thnk about strategies for analyzing the data you gather: from coding to variable differenciation. Excel is a great place to start! Again ... here are some "training" resources to which you might want to turn:
-- Atomic Learning (web-based software training and support)
-- BATS workshops at SDSU (and handouts in PDF format)
-- Classes (computers/office skills) available at North City Career Center
-- Tutorials available from Microsoft/Education

Two questions to ponder:

How do surveys (as evaluators use them) compare to political and marketing polls?

How can a review of the literature help you develop better (and more focused) surveys?

Examples ...

-- a survey administered to clients of students enrolled last Spring (2004) in 791BC
-- a "start of course" survey administered to students enrolled in EdTec470 (as part of the LTCA grant)
-- instruments created by 791BC students: Fall '01 and Spring '03

Tools (with which you want to be familiar) ...

-- Zoomerang (Free trail only for 10 days. Raw data will not be available.)
-- SurveyMonkey (30-day trial; but limited number of questions per survey; raw data available; recommended for your study)
-- Response-o-Matic
-- SurveyShare
-- SurveySuite
-- Free Online Surveys.com
