Coding your cover letter
Now that you have developed a schema, you can mark-up your cover letter, as well as other documents that would be useful to you in developing alternate versions, or augmented versions.
But, first you need to put your schema to use.
- Open your cover letter in MS Word
- Under "Tools" in the menu bar, click on "Templates and Add-ins".

- When the Templates and Add-ins dialog box appear, select "XML Schema," and click on the "Add Schema"button.

- Find the schema file, which should have a .xsd suffix, and open the file.

- Type in the file name of your schema file in the URI window, and click "Ok".
- You will see that the schema is added to your document. Make sure that the schema that you just added is selected, and click"OK".

- Notice that the "Letter" document type has been added to the XML Structure pane on the right side of the screen.
- Select "Show XML tags in the document".

- Click on the "Letter" document type. Click on the "Apply to entire document" button in the dialog box that appears.

- Note that your entire document is tagged as "letter".

- Also note that your elements have appeared in the "Choose an element to apply to your current selection:" window in the lower part o the XML structure pane.
- Deselect "List only child elements of the current" below the "Choose an element to apply to your current selection:" window to reveal all the child elements, for example, in the "body" element.

- Select your name in cover letter and click on the "myName" element.

- Mark-up the rest of your document following the same process. Note that in the "Elements in the document" window at the top of the XML Structure pane a visual tree of your elements is formed and you continue to mark-up your document.
