Week 8: Deciding on a Learning Environment

Maria Schutt will provide you with an introduction to issues of human-computer interfaces (HCI) and usability. She will conduct the session via Breeze at the following URL (you can participate from any Internet-connected computer, ideally with a microphone so you don't have to type everything):
http://edbreeze.sdsu.edu/r55319290/

When her session concludes, we will switch Breeze rooms for the rest of the class. You can go to

After the fact: go to the following URLs to see the recording of our sessions:

You can also just review the PowerPoint on Weighted Sum, and look at the Excel spreadsheet created for choosing our vacation destination.

We'll have a follow-up discussion about this week's presentation and last week's overview of virtual learning. What are the essential ingredients of a good learning environment? What do you lose and what do you gain when the classroom becomes virtual? What are some of the design aspects of a virtual classroom environment which would enhance its usability?

Next, we'll review the weighted-sum technique described in Chapter 10 of the Jones book. We'll apply it in class to the process of deciding on a well-earned vacation trip. Then we'll talk about doing it again as part of your Project 2 Assignment.

For Next Week's Class

  • Prepare your group presentation on Project 1
  • Start work on Project 2.
  • Skim through the Higgins book and blog about any techniques that particularly catch your eye or that you may have some prior experience with.
