Overview
Travel is one of the oldest and most effective modes of learning and education. Study abroad combines formal, academic learning and informal learning in a cross-cultural context.
In this course, you will use a systematic approach to design travel plans that maximize both formal and informal learning experiences in an international setting. Specifically, you will:
- use tools of educational technology to identify relevant personal, academic and career goals.
- scout the host culture and prepare background documents to familiarize them with their destinations.
- develop a detailed plan that proposes strategies for how you will deal with various cultural, academic and logistical issues you will face on their journey.
- propose a plan for how you will document, report on, and reflect on your experiences while you are away and upon your return.
Through research, discussion and role-playing, you will examine the ways in which cultural differences and similiarities can influence relationships with individuals in the host culture. You will use observation, analysis, and comparison strategies drawn from education, history, anthropology, sociology, psychology and the arts to anticipate, plan, prepare and carry out a journey that will provide memories for a lifetime.
