Video Baseline Skills

Video production has become one the most common media of communication. With the advent of hand-held video cameras at affordable prices, they have become ubiquitous in many organizations for a wide range of applications from business communications to training, and security; as well as among families for making home-made movies. Among the many uses of video is public service announcements (PSA) that are shown on television and the Internet on a variety of topics ranging from child safety, to refraining from smoking, not drinking and driving, and many other similar examples. In this course, you will create a short video public service announcement that is 30 seconds in length and will augment your website with this PSA.

In this exercise you will use iMovie to edit the simple sequence that you created in the previous assignment. After you have completed editing your video sequence, you must upload the file on ROHAN and link your video to your assignment page.

Video Production (PSA)

Proposal- The public service announcement that you will produce is to augment and reinforce the message of your website. You must write a proposal for your PSA. However, since it is supporting your website, this proposal will be shorter than the one you wrote for your website and will include the following sections:

Script- You must write a script for your PSA according the format that will be presented to you in class lectures. A script must include a description of of all the visuals, as as well as the related music, sound effects, and narration to each shot.

Use Google Pages to develop your script and link it to your assignment page.

Storyboard- You must create a storyboard for your PSA. A storyboard includes sketches of each shot in the production. A storyboard is a necessary production tool, especially when a crew is involved. It quickly communicates to the entire crew as to the purpose and composition of each shot.

Use Google Pages to develop your storyboard, and link it to your assignment page.

Legal- You will need to have each person appearing in your PSA sign a model release so you can publish the video on the Web. SDSU has a standard release available for download here.

Video Production

Plan to reserve a camera at least two weeks in advance of the day that you intend to shoot your PSA. You must be the person who will shoot video (camera person) although you may ask for help from others in class to help you with acting, placing microphones, lighting and preparing the set. Unless you are Alfred Hitchcock, you should not appear in your own movies!

Video Post-production

Once you have recorded your video, you can use any of them computers in the IML or the classroom to edit your video. During post production, you can add title to your PSA, or include music and narration as well. Once you have completed your PSA, upload the file to ROHAN and link it to the appropriate page in your Website.

Attendance & Active Participation

Media production procedures are simple. However, each task must be completed on the deadline. Otherwise, deadlines pile up and after a short period of time they seem unattainable. It is important that you attend class each week and actively engage in completing your projects. For each class session that you miss, you will loose 2 points. Also, you must spend 3 hours per week for each class in the Instructional Media Lab, or a computer of your choice, to work on your assignments.
