Using ratios and measurements the student will learn how to calculate distances on a map.
Anticipatory Set
Ask the students, "Who thinks they live the furthest from the school?" Repeat the question for the one who lives the closest to the school.
Resources
Overhead map of school area, overhead ruler, copied maps of the world, and rulers.
Guided Practice
- Use overhead of Thomas Bros. map of surrounding area of the school. Plot three to five student's homes with connection to the school library.
- Measure line segments and record distances on chart on board.
- Convert line segment distances into miles by using the legend given by the Thomas Bros. map.
- Compare distances to see who actually lives the furthest/closest to the school.
- Working in groups, the students will receive a copied map of the world with clear legend.
- Give the student groups a path of cities to visit and calculate distances between.
- Tell the students "Happy Travelling!"
Evaluation
At the end of today's lesson the group will be evaluated by participation and correctly calculated distances.
