Introduction
What if there were no families? What would you do if everybody you were
close to were no longer there? Put yourself in this position and think about
what you would do to survive. This situation comes to life in the novel
Lord of the Flies. Before we look in on the experiences of
these courageous boys, lets imagine you and a few other kids secluded from
the rest of the world. What would you do? How would you live?
The Task
- To write a creative short story where the students put themselves
on a deserted island with ten other kids.
- To complete the novel within the allotted time.
- To write a reflection and book review.

Resources
The resources that will be utilized for this lesson are: a a computer with
internet access and a class set of books.
The Process
1. Socratic Seminar on the topic of: What if there were no families?
Discuss what they would do, how they would feel.
2. Assignment: Write a short story that takes place in a remote
area(desert, jungle, island, ect..) where you and five friends have no possible
contact with anyone else. Discuss what problems might occur? Who would be
in charge? What would you do first?
3. Share stories with the class. Use them as an introduction to the
novel.
4. Read the novel, Lord of the Flies as a class.
5. After the completion of the novel, discuss the story and compare
it to their short stories.
6. Write a book review using examples from the internet to assist
you. It should be done as if it was to appear in a magazine or newspaper.

7. Closure: Write a reflection on what you learned and what your
thoughts were on the novel.

Evaluation
There will be a total of three papers due.
- Short Story: 25 points
- Book Review: 25 points
- Reflection: 15 points
- Participation: 25 points
Conclusion
This lesson will give them a sense of the importance of family
and how a family doesn't have to consist of a mother, father, and children.
They will have the opportunity to write creatively and critically by stating
their opinions.
