Week #1: The Tundra

Introduction

In Science class , we are starting a new unit on terrestrial biomes and animal leadership. By the end of this week, you will have completed six worksheets about biomes and the tundra. You will also have written a 1-2 page research paper on gray wolves.

Resources

To accomplish these tasks, you will need pages 1-13 in your Terrestrial Biomes packet. You will also do research on gray wolves in the library. Be sure to look at books other than just encyclopedias. There are some interesting web sites about gray wolves on the internet.

The Process

You should go through the following steps in order to accomplish your tasks this week:
  1. Read "Looking Around Us" on page 1 of Terrestrial Biomes and complete the accompanying worksheet on page 2 using complete sentences.

  7. Write a 1-2 page paper on wolves. Your paper should include some general information, information on the social structure of wolf packs, who their pack leaders are, and how they ensure the survival of the rest of the pack.

Learning Advice

Prior to reading each section in Terrestrial Biomes, you should look over the questions on the accompanying worksheet. Then, when you read the section, highlight or underline the information that will help you answer the questions.

Evaluation

This week you will be graded on how well you answered the questions on the worksheets using clear, complete sentences. You will also be graded on how well you described the wolf's social organization and role of pack leaders in your research paper.

Conclusion

By the end of this week, you should have learned about biomes, the role of plants and animals in food chains, the tundra, and about the social structure of wolves and how their pack leaders ensure the pack's survival.

The Task

By the end of this week, you will have completed three worksheets on deserts, and you will have written two 2-page research papers. The first paper will compare and contrast the social structure and leadership roles of two animals we studied. The second paper will compare and contrast the characteristics and roles of animal leaders and human leaders.

Conclusion

Our unit on terrestrial biomes and animal leadership has now come to an end. You have learned about six different terrestrial biomes, and studied three animal species in depth. How do animal leaders help the survival of the other animals? How are animal leaders similar to human leaders? How are they different? You should have discovered the answers to these questions, as well as many others during this unit.
